Second Conditional Formation: docspub
[Start by showing up the pictures of the various monsters, and eliciting the names from students.  (The pictures below are not mine, but are taken from various places around the Internet).  Then I ask students, "What would you do if you saw a ghost?  What would you do if a giant came to your house? etc.  Then give the students the story cut into pieces (below) and have them arrange the story in the correct.  Once they have finished, take the story from them, and give them the "fill in the gaps" version of the story.
If students are having trouble with the fill in the gaps, place a copy of the answers outside the classroom.  Students can leave their seat to look at the answers, but can not take their papers with them, so they must remember the correct verb form until they get back to their seat.]

John: Are you afraid of ghosts?
Paul: No, of course not.  Ghosts aren't real.  So there is nothing to be afraid of.
John: But what if ghosts were real? If ghosts were real, would you be afraid of them?
Paul: No, I wouldn't.  If I saw a ghost, I wouldn't be afraid.  If there was  a ghost, then I would just lock my door so it couldn't get inside.

John: But if ghosts were real, then they would be able to go through doors.
Paul: Okay, if the ghost went through the door, then I would hit the ghost with my baseball bat.

John: But if ghosts were real, you wouldn't be able to hit them.  If ghosts were real, they wouldn't have solid bodies.  The baseball bat would go right through the air.  Ghosts would be just made of air
Paul: Okay, then if the ghost was made of air, then I would use a vacuum cleaner to suck the ghost up.

John: Okay, forget about the ghost .  What about a vampire?  Are you afraid of vampires?
Paul: No, of course not.  Vampires aren't real either, so why would I be afraid.

John: But what if vampires were real?  What would you do if a vampire came to your house?

Paul: If a vampire came to my house, I would hold a silver cross.  If vampires were real, they would be scared of silver crosses.
John: Okay, forget about the vampire.  What about werewolves.  What would you do if a werewolf came to your house?

Paul: If a werewolf came to my house, I would shoot it with a silver bullet.
John: Okay, forget about the werewolf.  What about a mummy?  What would you do if a mummy came to your house.

Paul: If a mummy came to my house, I would use fire to frighten it away.
John: Okay, forget about the mummy.  What if a giant came to your house?

Paul: If a giant came to my house, I would run away.  I wouldn't be able to fight a giant.  A giant would be too big to fight.
