Fortunately Unfortunately ESL Activity

[In an effort to keep track of useful materials--so I can find it again when I need it--I'm collecting links to stuff that I've had good luck with using in class. I'm indexing it, along with my own materials, over here and here.]

The above link is to a PDF that makes a writing activity out of the Children's book Fortunately by Remy Charlip (A).  

This was a book I remembered from my childhood, because my 4th grade teacher also had us do a creative writing assignment based of off this book.

I spent a tremendous amount of time searching for a downloadable PDF copy of this book so I could share it with my students.  (I'd be embarrassed to tell you how much time I spent in this fruitless search.)

In the end, I was reduced to trying to reconstruct the book from screengrabs I made from a read-along youtube video.  [YOUTUBE LINK HERE].

The screengrabs are, as you would expect, grainy and pixely and not ideal.  It was the best I could do at the time.  But for whatever it's worth, here is a link to the PowerPoint I made (Google drive, slides, pub).

I used this book, and the accompanying writing activity. to supplement a lesson in the Lifestyle Intermediate Coursebook on active listening.  In the textbook, students were learning appropriate phrases to respond to hearing bad news ("what a pity", "that's a nuisance") and good news ("that's fantastic!", "Terrific").  But this writing activity can easily be used just as a general all purpose creative writing exercise in ESL, without the active listening component.
